The Bureau of Meteorology’s mobile website has been recognised for its excellent design in the weather category at this year’s Australian Mobile and App Design Awards, held in Sydney last night.

The Bureau was awarded first place for producing a ‘simple, user-friendly site that makes it easier for people to access weather information on-the-move’.

“The mobile website was designed following intensive market research to identify the weather information needs and habits of the public and specific industry groups,” said Senator Simon Birmingham, Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment.

“The research showed that mobile website visitors wanted a ‘full weather snapshot’ to help them make practical decisions and plan their day on the go,” Senator Birmingham said.

“The Bureau’s website is the only mobile weather service that provides pinpointed weather forecasts using a six kilometre grid, which provides users with accurate and localised information.

“The mobile website is the Bureau’s first mobile product offering for smartphone users with development of a weather app for Microsoft Windows, Apple iOS and Android platforms well underway,” Senator Birmingham said.

The Australian Mobile and App Design Awards Weather Category relates to applications themed around informing users on the weather.
