The release of the Australian Research Council’s Excellence in Research 2015 results highlight continued improvement in the high-quality and world-class standard of Australian university research.

The Turnbull Government is committed to enhancing Australia’s excellence in research as part of its innovation agenda – with a particular focus on the commercialisation of research to take it from lab to everyday life.

World-class research is at the forefront of innovation and this report shows that Australia continues to lead the way in terms of the quality of our research.

However the report also highlights there are improvements to be made in the commercialisation of our research to more effectively address Australia’s economic, social and environmental challenges.

In Australia, and around the world, high quality research is driving innovation that saves lives, answers social and environmental imperatives, improves economic productivity and growth, and creates the jobs of the future.

This round’s Excellence in Research internationally benchmarked data shows that Australia’s research effort, conducted in universities across the nation and in every broad discipline group, continues to perform above world standard.

The Turnbull Government is committed to continuing to build on the rapid developments in our research sector that open new job and industry opportunities in our economy.

This is a vital piece of our economic puzzle and one of the key drivers of competitiveness, productivity, economic growth and higher living standards.

The Australian Government will invest $9.7 billion in 2015–16 into research across education, industry, health, defence, environment and agriculture.

In an increasingly competitive and dynamic world our challenge is to ensure this investment produces benefits for all Australians.
