The Federal Coalition congratulates Prabowo Subianto on his election as the next President of Indonesia.
The sustained prosperity of Indonesia holds immense importance and benefit for our region. Australia has long had a deep connection to Indonesia as one of our nearest neighbours. We have forged deep ties through cooperation on key issues including in areas of defence, security, and trade.
The importance and scale of Australia’s relationship with Indonesia is reflected in the fact that Jakarta hosts Australia’s largest diplomatic mission.
The President-elect, through his role as Indonesia’s Defence Minister, has forged close ties with Australia, including through engagement in the Australia-Indonesia 2+2 Defence and Foreign Ministers meetings, where he has reinforced commitments to regional security and stability.
The relationship between our two countries was significantly enhanced under the former Coalition Government through the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA) which entered into force in July 2020, along with successful cooperation to halt the scourge of people smuggling.
Indonesia is one of the fastest growing economies in the Indo-Pacific and presents enormous opportunity for Australian businesses. The IA-CEPA ensures Australia is positioned to drive two-way benefit through economic cooperation.
Whilst current President Joko Widodo remains in his position until later this year, it is important that as this election has determined his successor, we acknowledge President Widodo’s staunch commitment to Indonesia-Australia relations.
President Widodo has been a regular visitor to Australia, including in 2020 when, as a guest of the Australian Government, he addressed our Parliament.
The Coalition thanks President Widodo for his commitment to the relationship between our two nations and we look forward to continuing engagement with him through the remainder of his Presidential term.
