Senior Australians’ concerns at power bill rises highlight the looming impacts of Julia Gillard’s carbon tax, Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment Simon Birmingham said today.

National Seniors has warned that expected price hikes for electricity and gas will wipe out advance carbon tax compensation payments made to retirees in recent weeks.

“The carbon tax is about to hit hard our most vulnerable Australians most susceptible to electricity and gas price rises,” Senator Birmingham said today.

“Senior Australians are right to be concerned at the impact of the carbon tax on their power bills, and that’s before flow on costs increases hit the price of everything.

“The Government’s own Treasury forecasts indicate millions of Australians will be worse off under this toxic tax, which is designed to keep going up and up.

“The Coalition has made repealing the carbon tax our first order of business in government, but in the meantime senior Australians will be among the millions nationwide paying for Julia Gillard’s broken promise.”
