Kakadu National Park is set for a $216 million upgrade designed to lure more visitors to the iconic Australian landmark and drive more investment and jobs in the Territory.
As part of the plan announced today by the Liberal-National Government, the neighbouring township of Jabiru will also receive support to transition to a tourism-based economy.
World-Heritage Listed Kakadu is Australia’s largest national park and one of our most iconic. Together with the Liberal-National Government’s new Kakadu Tourism Master Plan, this major investment will help attract greater numbers of visitors to this uniquely Australian tourism destination.
Currently Kakadu attracts some 261,000 visitors each year, sustaining many local jobs and businesses. However, the NT has failed to share in the growth in visitor numbers achieved across the rest of Australia in recent years.This investment will provide the access, infrastructure and attractions to ensure Kakadu is a tourism hero for Australia, supporting even more indigenous business and employment.
With new and upgraded tourism facilities, the visitor-experience at Kakadu will be taken to the next level with existing camping grounds to be upgraded, along with walking tracks, viewing platforms, signage, mobile and wifi services.
This investment is timely, on the back of the Liberal-National Government’s record funding to Tourism Australia to lure more international visitors down under with cutting-edge campaigns such as Dundee where the diverse landscapes of Kakadu feature.
The Liberal National-Government continues to make significant investments in Australia’s tourism sector creating more jobs for Australians, particularly in regional areas such as Cradle Mountain in Tasmania and the Great Ocean Road in Victoria.
Regional tourism around the country will benefit from the $45 million program earmarked especially to support tourism as part of round 3 of the Liberal-National Government’s Building Better Regions Fund. This program will assist many other regional areas to develop their tourism industry creating more employment for rural and regional Australia.
